Avignon and beer pong

A weekend ago I took a day trip to Avignon, an hour or so away on the bus. This is a well-know Provencal city, whose commercial centre is within the confines of a brick wall.

While here my friends and I visited The Palais des Papes (Pope’s Palace), which ended up taking most of the day. It’s huge and so easy to get lost exploring the rich Medieval Gothic history.

After getting cultural we headed down to the river to check out Le pont Saint Bénezet. This is a Medieval-style bridge that was built between 1777 and 1885, then sadly destroyed. It was eventually rebuilt with 22 arches but the upkeep of the bridge was expensive especially with the Rhone often flooding. The bridge was finally abandoned mid-17th Century and only 4 arches remain. It literally stops in the middle of the river!

Other adventures from the past few weeks include an afternoon visit to Marseille. This city grows on me each time. My friend Izzi and I hunted around for some vintage shops, which took us on a different route down alleyways that are filled from top to bottom with the best street art I have seen yet.

Grace and I thought a good way to spend a Monday night was to enter a French beer pong contest that our French friends often play in. We were the last team to enter so needless to say by the time we came to play a few glasses of beer had already been consumed. Our opposition thought we were a bit of a joke but we thought coming into the game as the underdogs would work to our advantage. A few stray warm up throws and we were away. However, our opposition blatantly practice in their spare time as the game was all over within 2 or so minutes. However, Grace seemed to think a rematch was in order. Our only talent in relation to beer pong was probably coming up with our team name – team big girls – which leads me onto some exciting news!…

“Big Girls Take Europe is a fusion of the two food-distracted minds of ‘Big Girls’ Grace Louisy and Brooke Hobson. My Sunday run took me past some pretty sights. Yes, I did say my run. Amongst all the eating I get some exercise in too.
